Student Selected for Toyota Youth for Understanding Program

Junior Whitney Cox Selected to Governor's School for the Arts

Congratulations to junior Whitney Cox who has been accepted into the Governor’s School for the Arts in Visual Arts. Over 1,800 applicants applied, and Whitney will join 222 other talented young Kentuckians at Transylvania University this summer. She will attend master classes, workshops and performances, and participate in exciting field trips and special arts events. Congratulations to Whitney on this great honor.

Sophomore Wins in Kentucky Equine Youth Festival Art Contest

Four Juniors Selected for Governor's Scholar Program

 We are excited to announce that four of our juniors have been selected to the prestigious Governor’s Scholar Program.  As you may be aware, schools are only permitted to send a certain number of candidates based on their junior enrollment.  As a result, the smaller high schools can send in only a limited number of candidates. Due to our academic excellence, all of our candidates were chosen. We congratulate the following students: Maria Blom, Gabrielle Notorgiacomo, Marcus Schwarting and Nicole Zatorski. Congratulations to these students and their families, and congratulations to our great Villa teachers!

French Students Excel in Regional World Language Showcase

Congratulations to our French students who participated in the Regional World Language Showcase recently. We are very proud of junior Nicole Zatorski who placed 1st in Intermediate Listening. Juniors Rachael Tingley and Jessica Voorhees earned the top 2 spots in Intermediate Reading, as well as 7th graders Timo Keseberg and Ravyn Gunn, who tested well within the French 3 range in their writing. Ravyn also received 1st place in Novice Reading. Thank you for representing Villa so well, and congratulations to our high school and junior high French students!

Villa Girl Basketball Players Named to Division III All-Team

On March 17, the Northern Kentucky Girls Basketball Coaches Association held their awards banquet at the Drees Pavilion. Three VMA players were named to the association’s Division III All-StarTeam:   seniors Lauren Dumaine and Allie Hennard, and junior Alex Hengge. Congratulations to these students on being honored and for their positive representation of Villa Madonna. Students Win Awards at Kentucky United Nations Assembly

8th Grader Ben Jones Qualifies for State Geography Bee

Congratulations to 8th Grader Ben Jones who qualified for the state geography bee this April. This competition is only for the best 100 scores on the qualifying test in the state of Kentucky. Ben was the school champion at Villa in the fall, and he will go for the National Bee in the spring in D.C. Congratulatiions to Ben for all his hard work and representation of Villa.

Junior Zatorski earns First Place in Science/Engineering Fair

Boy Basketball Players Earn Top Awards

Congratulations to boy basketball players Troy Phelps, Andy Piccirillo, and Andrew Smith who have all been named to the NKBBCA DIII All-Star Team.
Andrew Smith was also voted Mr. Hustle AND Defensive Player of the Year – what a great honor.

These gentlemen will be honored at the Coaches' Association Banquet on March 17.

Senior Earns First Place in American Chemical Society Competition

 We are happy to announce that three of our National Merit Seminfinalists have now been named National Merit Finalists: Meggie Lund, Randy Lund, and Bahar Pahlevani. They are part of a group of 15,000 Finalists selected from an original pool of approximately 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT. Congratulations to Meggie, Randy and Bahar.
 In our class of 50 seniors, we have THREE NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS, ONE NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST, AND TWO NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS. What a tribute to our students, teachers and parents.

Latin Students Earn Awards at Junior Classic League

 Our Latin students did extremely well at the February Junior Classic League where approximately 350 students competed. Congratulations to freshman Alexa Meier who earned FIRST PLACE in Graphic Arts, and freshman Matthew Schubert earned SECOND PLACE in Fine Arts.  Their pieces were very clever and inventive, and we congratulate them.

Students Named to Enquirer All Star Teams and Honorable Mentions

 The Cincinnati Enquirer named their All-Star Teams, and we are happy to congratulate our Villa athletes who were named to the teams or received Honorable Mention. In Cross Country, congratulations to Eric Baugh who was named First Team. Eric won the NKAC Division II individual championship, the Diocese of Covington Invitational individual championship, placed 5th in the Class A, Region 4 meet and then finished 5th in the Class A State Meet. In girls Golf, freshman Jenna McGuire was named First Team. Jenna was selected to the Ky. Golf Coaches Association Region 6 team after winning the NKAC Division II individual title. She also won the Ninth Region All A Classic individual title and placed 7th in the All A Classic state tournament. We congratulate Eric and Jenna on being named First Team All Stars.
Several of our athletes were also awarded Honorable Mention by the Enquirer. Congratulations to Kelsey McQueen and Ellie Stoddart for Honorable Mention in Volleyball. Villa Students Named National Merit Commended Students

 Congratulations to seniors Megan Barton and Ben Brewer who have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Over 1.5 million students took the PSAT National Merit Qualifying Test last October.  50,000 students were identified in the program with the highest scores, and 16,000 of those students were named Semifinalists.  The remaining 34,000 high performers are named Commended Students.  These students placed among the top 5% of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the PSAT. Congratulations to Megan and Ben who join our four Semifinalists as National Merit students! The tradition of excellence continues here at Villa Madonna Academy.

Villa Tops in Diocese in National Merit Semifinalists

 Villa Madonna Academy announces that four students have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as Semifinalists: Margaret Lund, Randolph Lund, Megan Monohan and Bahar Pahlevani.
These four students are part of the 16,000 Semifinalists across the nation.   Approximately 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. These Semifinalists will compete to become Finalists based upon their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received. In addition, they must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s performance on the qualifying test.
Villa has more National Merit Semifinalists than any other school in the Diocese with National Merit students, and the only other public school in the area with more National Merit Students is Highlands (5) with a student body of over 800 students.
 What an accomplishment and a tribute to our students, parents and faculty!

ACT Scores Once Again Tops in Area

 Congratulations to our students on the ACT scores that substantially surpass the state and national levels. Villa scores surpass – in every area -  Beechwood and Highlands, two of the top-scoring schools in the state. Villa’s composite is a 26.5, and in the Percent of ACT-Tested Students Ready for College-Level Coursework, 100% of Villa students reach the benchmark for College English readiness. Villa students far surpass the state averages in College Algebra, College Social Science, College Biology and Meeting All 4 benchmarks. We are awaiting release of the Diocesan averages since Villa surpassed the Diocesan, state and national scores last year! Congratulations to the students, parents, and our fantastic faculty who make this the best school in the area.

Six Students Are National Merit Quarter Finalists

The following students met the requirements to enter the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.  With a Selection Index score of 200 or above, each of these students is among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of some 1.5 million program entrants.  Of the more than 50,000 students being recognized, about 1,000 will be named National Merit Semifinalists in September.

Villa JETS Team Merits Awards

  Congratulations to Villa’s JETS team (Junior Engineering Technical Society) who, in their competition, swept 1st and 2nd place in our division for the entire state of Kentucky.  In addition, our scores placed us 4th and 5th in the state of Kentucky regardless of size/division (out of 34 teams competing.) Senior Chosen as Anthony Munoz Straight A Finalist

 Congratulations to senior Max LeNeave who has been chosen as a finalist for the 2012 Anthony Muñoz Foundation Straight “A” Student Award presented by PNC. With over 190 schools in the Tri-State area and hundreds of applicants, Max is one of eighteen finalists who will receive a $2,000 college scholarship and have the opportunity to be selected to win one of two $3,000 scholarships (for a total of $5,000). Max was nominated by Ms. Rodenkirchen for his Academic excellence, Athletic achievements, strong Ambition, a winning attitude, the ability to overcome Adversity and for having an Active role in the community. Max will attend this year’s luncheon which will be held on April 24 at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse located in downtown Cincinnati. This is quite an honor for Max and for Villa, so congratulations to Max LeNeave!

Senior Jenna Sharp Wins Shakespeare Competition

Congratulations to senior Jenna Sharp who won the final competition of The English-Speaking Union - Shakespeare Competition:
 
  • Jenna won the final competition and will compete at Lincoln Center in New York City, April 22-24.   She will be one of around 70 "shakespeareans" competing. Jenna will be performing a monologue, a sonnet, and a "cold read" from a work by Shakespeare.
  • The all expense paid trip to NY also includes a full day workshop where Jenna will be working with seasoned professionals.
  • Some of the prior year judges of the Nationals include Sarah Jessica Parker, Gene Wilder, Sam Watterson, and Blythe Danner, so Jenna might get to meet some really COOL PEOPLE.
  • She will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship at a special Board Meeting and Dinner this Thursday.
  • Mrs. Meyn is awarded $400.00 as the Teacher of the First Place Winner.
  • The National winner will be awarded a trip to England for acting workshops and the opportunity to perform in some awesome English Theatres.

Senior Awarded 4 Year Army ROTC Scholarship

 Congratulations to senior Kelsi Pickens who has officially been awarded a 4 year full (tuition, room and board, books, and monthly stipend) scholarship from the Army ROTC. She will attend the University of Kentucky in the fall as an Army ROTC cadet. This is an honored award. Approximately 1200 students all across the United States will earn this scholarship to attend college. After Kelsi graduates with her Dietetics degree, she will be commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant (officer) in the US Army and serve our country for four years.   Congratulations, Kelsi!

Latin Students Earn Honors at Ky. Junior Clasical League State Convention

  Thirty Villa Madonna Academy High School Latin students represented our school this weekend at the Kentucky Junior Classical League State Convention. This was our strongest showing at convention to date, and, simply put, we made our presence known! Villa certamen teams all posted higher scores than ever before. We brought home hardware for a 3rd Place finish in our Roll Call Skit, produced by Chip and Fox Purcell, Tyler Ransdell, Brent Schleper, and Zacko Rightmire. A school t-shirt design by Grant Geisbrecht and Noelle Purcell earned 1st Place. Many Villa students placed in academic testing; notably, Eric Baugh earned 1st Place in Vocabulary in a field of over 200 students. Students, thanks for your endless enthusiasm and for being first class ambassadors for Villa Madonna Academy! We especially thank Mr. Mark Atwood for all he has done for our Latin students and program!

Two Students Chosen for TAP MD Program

Out of nearly 4000 turkeys submitted by mail and email in the 23rd Enquirer Dress the Turkey contest, only approximately 66 turkeys were chosen for publication in the paper and online. Villa Invited to PIXAR Campus

 Senior James Ruschman and his mother accompanied teacher Mr. Steve Oldfield to the PIXAR Campus in California on October 16-18. They met with John Lasseter, Director of CARS 2 and Lead Driver, in addition to Denise Ream, Producer of CARS 2 and Pit-Crew Chief. They learned about the visual look of the movie in meetings with the production designer, director of photography, character art director, supervising animators and supervising technical director. This is the first-ever, hands-on experiential junket at Pixar, and James was thrilled to take along his portfolio and network.

High School Earns Exemplary Service Project Award

Villa Madonna Academy High School has been awarded the  EXEMPLARY HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT AWARD.  The award will be presented at the Greater Cincinnati Celebration of Service on September 27! The award is for our work in Guatemala where, this year, our group installed concrete floors, stoves and water purification systems in homes and in the local school. In addition, our Tri-M music students will be performing at the event.

Villa Leads Diocese in Sen. Jeff Green Scholars

Senior Wins State KHSAA Sportshmanship Award

Senior Katie Ransdell had been notified last month that she had won the Regional KHSAA Sportsmanship Award and, as a result, was eligible for the State Award. All of those regional award winners were invited to dinner last night at the KHSAA headquarters in Lexington. Out of the 293 schools in Kentucky, 16 regions, 15 sanctioned sports - two winners were selected: one girl, one boy. Senior Merits Semi-Final Award in John Stossel Essay Contest

Senior Katie Ransdell’s essay has been selected as a Semi-finalist in the Stossel in the Classroom “What’s Great About America Essay Contest.” Katie received a certificate and a check for $100, and the VMA English Department received an autographed copy of John Stossel’s book. More than 7,500 students from across the country participated in the essay contest, and all winners were in the top 3% of all essays submitted. Congratulations to Katie Ransdell!

Two of our juniors have been selected as Governor’s Scholars. This is a highly competitive process among all juniors in the state of Kentucky. Junior Chosen for United States Naval Summer Seminar

Junior Rachel Bailey is one of 750 students from across the country selected to participate in the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar in Annapolis, this June. The students live in the midshipman hall, attend academic classes, and participate in daily physical training, experiencing the daily life at the Academy. Along with this, Rachel is automatically applied to the Academy for admission.  Congratulations to Rachel.

Students Selected to Represent Ky at National Conference

From the 3000 students from both KYA and KUNA, a few select were nominated to submit an application to represent Kentucky at CONA (Conference on National Affairs, held in North Carolina each summer with reps from other states).  The application required the submittal of an original bill proposal on a subject of national interest and several short essays.  Of 98 applicants, 25 students were selected to attend.  These were announced at the end of the conference last weekend.  Corey Martin and Nicole Zatorski were selected, and Zacko Rightmire was selected as an alternate. 
This is quite an honor that three students from our school were selected! Congratulations to Corey, Nicole and Zacko!

VMA Students Win at APEC Conference

Ten Villa Madonna Academy High School students represented Malaysia in the simulated APEC Conference at the University of Cincinnati on March 12. The Trade Committee came in 1st Place, and the Security Affairs, Social Affairs and Science & Technology committees all came in 2nd Place. National Merit Names Three VMA Students as Finalists

We begin today with fantastic news from National Merit. The National Merit Scholarship Program has determined which of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September are now National Merit Finalists. You will remember that these students are selected from an original pool of more than 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT. As seniors, National Merit selects the Finalists based on not only their PSAT score but recommendations and student essays. 
 
We are proud to announce that our three Semifinalists are now FINALISTS!!!! Congratulations to Cecily Kennedy, Sarahmarie Specht-Bird and Lauren Vennefron who have been named National Merit Finalists.
 
In a school our size, to have three National Merit Finalists truly speaks to the faculty, students and parents and the incredible program in our high school.  
 
In addition, our ACT scores continue to be higher than the Diocesan, State and National levels. Also, almost 10% of the senior class has been recognized as National Merit Finalists, Semifinalists and Commended students!

 The Villa JCL represented our school well at the Kentucky Junior Classical League convention. Villa won first prize in the “School Spirit” contest on the convention’s first day. VMA Students Win All Places in VFW Speech Contest

VFW Voice of Democracy Speech Contest Winners: Congratulations to Kiley Stoll, Lauren Wagner and Nicole Hennard who took the top three spots in the VFW Voice of Democracy Speech Contest.  This year, Villa competed against two other schools, Simon Kenton and Holmes.  There were 11 contestants and Villa took First, Second and Third places.
Nicole Hennard won the competition and advances to the district finals.
The students will be honored in a special ceremony early next year.
