All VMA students in grades 9-12 may participate.
What is the time committment?
Some activities require a weekly or bi-weekly commitment. Saturday events usually take place for a few hours in the morning. Recycling takes place before and after school one or two days each week.
What other regulations are there?
Each student participating in a service club event must agree to:
Bring an attitude of commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm.
Demonstrate humility in service.
Fulfill his or her responsibilities to the best of his or her abilities.
Not make a promise to a service recipient if that promise will go unfulfilled
Respect the humanity of all.
Take an interest in the welfare of the service recipient.
Notify the service coordinator (Mr. Jefferson: ) in case of an emergency or cancellation.
Any student, who misses a committed event more than twice, will not be asked to participate in any further events.
When are projects?
COP schedules a variety of events throughout the year. Projects occur during school, such as spreading Christmas joy, after school mentoring, while others take place on weekends, such as participating in a wheelchair wash.
Where are other COP projects?
Through Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, COP has mentored bi-weekly at Glenn O. Swing Elementary school. This year COP students will mentor at Howell Elementary School. They have also tutored at River Ridge Elementary. In addition, COP organized two different drives: a supply drive for the Children's Home and for Crayons to Computers, a free-store for teachers in Cincinnati. In the fall of 2005, the service club organized a Hunger Banquet to raise awareness on issues of poverty and hunger. They also volunteered at the Walk to Cure Diabetes.
In the spring of 2009, COP participated in the 600 strong Great American Cleanup and cooked at the Parish Kitchen. COP sponsored a fast in recognition of National Hunger/ Homelessness Week, a letter-writing and awareness campaign on World Aids Day, a Villa Alumna, who spoke on issues of Global Health, and sponsored a painting day at the Diocesan Children's Home. COP has also raised money for Save Darfur, Welcome House, and the Generalate Benedictine Sisters of Oshikuku in Shakati, Namibia at VMA Live.
