All students are required to take four years of English.

English I is a survey class that focuses on literary elements in short stories, novels, dramas, and poems.  This class looks at universal themes and answers the question of how these themes are applicable to the students at Villa today.

English II expands on this and concentrates on World Literature.

English III is a chronological study of American Literature that begins with Puritanism.

English IV is a study of British Literature.  Beginning with English II, students have the choice of taking College Preparatory English or Honors English.  This is contingent on student performance and teacher recommendation.  Students in English IV have the choice of College Preparatory English or Advanced Placement (AP) English.  Again, this is based on student performance and teacher recommendation.

Novel selections for all English classes are made according to AP trends.  All of the English classes use the MLA style of writing.    Students also have creative writing opportunities through writing contests that are posted throughout the year on the Writing Contest website.
