Volleyball Team Excels at All A Tournament

 Congratulations to the VMA Volleyball Team who emerged in the All A Tournament as Runner Up! The girls defeated Lloyd, Ludlow, Bellevue, Heritage and Dayton to meet Holy Cross in the finals. It was an all-day tournament, and the girls played well and were great representatives of our school. We congratulate two of the team members who were named to the All A Tournament Team: Jasmine Beal and Hannah Knochelmann.

Students Win Art Scholarships

Congratulations to senior Monica Pence who won the top scholarship ($2000) in the Taft Museum ARC Scholarship Program. This is the second consecutive year a VMAHigh School student has won this scholarship. Monica also won the People’s Choice Award ($100), the result of 436 ballots received. We also congratulate Cecily Kennedy who won a  $100 Merit Award.

Five VMA Students Selected for National Merit Scholarship Program

Blake Bryan Enquirer Ky. Basketball All-Star

We begin this week with great news. Congratulations to senior Blake Bryan who has been named by the Enquirer as a Ky. Basketball All-Star. Blake led Northern Kentucky in scoring, averaging 20.4 points per game. He also tallied 7.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. We congratulate Blake, and this is quite an honor for our high school!

We proudly announce that seniors Andrew Flach and Monica Pence have been named National Merit Finalists.  The National Merit Scholarship Program determined which of the 16,000 Semifinalists, from an original pool of over 1.2 million students, met all requirements and advanced to Finalist standing.  We are proud to continue the tradition of National Merit students.

Faculty Member Chosen as Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to social studies teacher Mr. Joe Cordonnier who was chosen as the recipient of the Cincinnatus Society, Northern Kentucky University, University of Cincinnati and Xavier University Outstanding Teacher Award.  Mr. C was chosen based upon his classroom teaching, service and professional development.

He was the only Catholic teacher in the area so recognized.

Senior Blake Bryan Chosen as LaRosa's MVP

For the week of February 1, 2020, VMa Senior Blake Bryan is the LaRosa's MVP of the Week!

This senior is a big-time scorer, who already has 1,200+ points in his great career and is Villa Madonna’s all-time leading scorer. A three-year varsity starter, Blake averaged 21 ppg. as a sophomore and 31 ppg. as a junior, when he led the entire state of Kentucky in scoring. He also averaged 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game. Blake was named 1st team all-Northern Kentucky both his sophomore and junior years. He holds numerous school records, including scoring a single-game record 48 points last season vs. Bellevue. Other monster games included 45 vs. Louisville Collegiate, 40 vs. Dayton and 38 vs. Lloyd. A good student who is active in community service, Blake has not yet selected a college, but plans to play at the next level. His favorite athlete is Jason Williams and most-like-to-meet is Brock Lesner. His favorite movie is American History X and his favorite book is Call of the Wild.

VMA Students Are Governor's Scholars Nominees

We would like to congratulate the following juniors whose applications for the Governor's Scholar Program have been forwarded to the State for selection:

Their selection will be finalized in mid-April. Each school is permitted to send a certain number of applicants based upon enrollment in the junior class. This year, VMA was guaranteed two applications to be sent directly to Frankfort. We then were permitted to send in four additional applications for consideration by a Diocesan committee. We are thrilled that the committee chose all four of our additional applications to be sent to Frankfort!

The Quick Recall Team of Andrew Flach, Monica Pence, Kim Schroer, MaryKate Greenwood, Hannah Knochelmann, Sarahmarie Specht-Bird, Connor Louis, Kimberly Yocum and Sarah Mustian having lost to Dixie earlier in the day came back and beat Dixie twice to claim first place. Thanks to all who participated and a special thank you to Ms. Kennedy, Sr. Nancy, Mrs. Rodenkirchen and all the parents who help support the team.  


Senior Alex Jennings Art Contest Winner

Congratulations to senior Alex Jennings whose Super Bowl bowling pin design is the winner! Alex entered The Holiday Pin Design Contest, painting a Halloween design on her bowling pin. Alex received a gift certificate and her bowling pin will be auctioned off with proceeds supporting Northern Kentucky High School Bowling. Congratulations to Alex Jennings!


Four Villa Students Named in the National Merit Program

Two Villa Madonna seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit scholarship competition. Andrew Flach, son of Jim and Karen Flach of FortWright, and Monica Pence, daughter of Terry and Valerie Pence of Edgewood, are among 217 semifinalists chosen from the state of Kentucky. 11,929 students from 288 Kentucky high schools participated in the competition by taking the PSAT last spring. Semifinalists represent the top 1.8% of test scores. 

In addition, Villa seniors Kim Schroer and Ryan Schroth were named National Merit Commended Students. These students scored in the top 3.6% in Kentucky.
There are 47 students in the Villa Madonna class of 2010.

Volleyball Honors and Division III Coach of the Year

The Northern Ky. Volleyball Coaches Association held their annual awards banquet on Monday. The following players received Division III Honors: Jasmine Beal was named 1st Team All-Region, Stephanie Sias was named 1st Team All-Region, Amy Kreutzer was named 2nd Team All-Region, and Hannah Knochelmann was selected Honorable Mention All-Region. Stephanie Sias also received the Deana Ravenscraft Scholarship Award. The JV Team was honored as JV Conference Champions! Also – our coach, Ms. Sandi Kitchen, was named Division III Coach of the Year!


AP Scholars Announced

We  congratulate seventeen students who were named as Advance Placement Scholars.  These awards are based on the results from the AP exams in May.  Thirteen of them are seniors last year, and four of them are our current seniors and have the opportunity to advance even further as AP Scholars this year.  Those four students are Kelsey Bosley, Monica Pence, Taylor Poe, and Curtis (Max) Sheldon.


National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students Announced

We have great news as we congratulate two of our seniors who are named as National Merit Semifinalists in the National Merit Program: Andrew Flach and Monica Pence.  Andrew and Monica will advance to the next level in competition for National Merit Finalists.  Two additional seniors are named as Commended Students in the National Merit Program: Kim Schroer and Ryan Schroth, and we congratulate them as well.  These four seniors ranked in the top 3% of the juniors in Kentucky on the basis of the PSAT which they took last October. This is quite an honor for all four students and for our school, and so we congratulate Andrew, Monica, Kim and Ryan.



AP Scholars Abound at VMA

AP Scholars:  VMAHigh School had 17 AP Scholars from the May testing:
  • Five (5)  Scholars with Distinction (Received an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more);
  • Two (2)  Scholars with Honor (Average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams);
  • Ten (10) AP Scholars (Received grades of 3 or higher on e or more AP Exams).


Class of 2008 Earns 300 College Credits

AP College Credit: The class of 2008 earned a total of 300 college credits based upon their AP scores and the standards used at the University of Kentucky (individual colleges and universities award the credits from their own specific criteria, and some universities require students to still take course in their major for which they received AP credit.) In addition, thirteen (13) seniors took the ThomasMoreCollege dual credit European History class and each student earned 6 hours of college credit. 


Evan Angus Remke Star of the Week

Congratulations to Evan Angus who was featured in the November 29 Enquirer as a Remke Student Achiever of the Week. In addition to the November 29 feature, Evan will be featured in Remke’s weekly advertisements and on Insight channels the week of November 30. He is also eligible to receive one of the Remke Scholarships awarded in May.
 


Third Place Winner in Enquire Turkey Contest

VMA Successful in JV Challenge

Congratulations to the JV Academic Team who placed second in the JV Challenge Tournament this past week. The Quick Recall team of Sarah Mustian, Jenna Sharp, Evan Tingley, Andy Poos, Rachel Bailey, Basia Szaflarski and Anna Sosso took 4th place. Ryan Froeling placed 3rd in Math and 5th in Science. Sarah Mustian placed 2nd in Arts & Humanities. Andy Poos placed 2nd in Science. Jenna Sharp placed 3rd in Language Arts and Anna Sosso placed 1st. Thanks to all of the students who participated and a special thanks to the parents and Ms. Rodenkirchen for all of their help on Saturday.

Senior Katherine Hayes Awarded Beckman Coulter Founders Scholarship

Graduating senior and co-valedictorian Katherine Hayes is awarded a 2009 Beckman Coulter Founders Scholarship.  Katherine is one of the final 13  candidates selected to be a recipient of this scholarship.  She was selected from over 100 applicants by a panel of admissions officers from Cal Tech, Cal Poly Pomona, Claremont McKenna College, and the University of Calirfornia, Irvine.
