Six Students Are National Merit Quarter Finalists Friday, April 27, 2012 (22 reads)
The following students met the requirements to enter the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. With a Selection Index score of 200 or above, each of these students is among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of some 1.5 million program entrants. Of the more than 50,000 students being recognized, about 1,000 will be named National Merit Semifinalists in September. Villa JETS Team Merits Awards Monday, April 16, 2012 (26 reads)
Congratulations to Villa’s JETS team (Junior Engineering Technical Society) who, in their competition, swept 1st and 2nd place in our division for the entire state of Kentucky. In addition, our scores placed us 4th and 5th in the state of Kentucky regardless of size/division (out of 34 teams competing.) This is in addition to our Regional placement of 2nd and 4th for our division. The national rankings will not be announced until sometime in May. Senior Chosen as Anthony Munoz Straight A Finalist Sunday, March 18, 2012 (34 reads)
Congratulations to senior Max LeNeave who has been chosen as a finalist for the 2012 Anthony Muñoz Foundation Straight “A” Student Award presented by PNC. With over 190 schools in the Tri-State area and hundreds of applicants, Max is one of eighteen finalists who will receive a $2,000 college scholarship and have the opportunity to be selected to win one of two $3,000 scholarships (for a total of $5,000). Max was nominated by Ms. Rodenkirchen for his Academic excellence, Athletic achievements, strong Ambition, a winning attitude, the ability to overcome Adversity and for having an Active role in the community. Max will attend this year’s luncheon which will be held on April 24 at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse located in downtown Cincinnati. This is quite an honor for Max and for Villa, so congratulations to Max LeNeave!

Senior Jenna Sharp Wins Shakespeare Competition Monday, March 12, 2012 (38 reads)
Congratulations to senior Jenna Sharp who won the final competition of The English-Speaking Union - Shakespeare Competition: - Jenna won the final competition and will compete at Lincoln Center in New York City, April 22-24. She will be one of around 70 "shakespeareans" competing. Jenna will be performing a monologue, a sonnet, and a "cold read" from a work by Shakespeare.
- The all expense paid trip to NY also includes a full day workshop where Jenna will be working with seasoned professionals.
- Some of the prior year judges of the Nationals include Sarah Jessica Parker, Gene Wilder, Sam Watterson, and Blythe Danner, so Jenna might get to meet some really COOL PEOPLE.
- She will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship at a special Board Meeting and Dinner this Thursday.
- Mrs. Meyn is awarded $400.00 as the Teacher of the First Place Winner.
- The National winner will be awarded a trip to England for acting workshops and the opportunity to perform in some awesome English Theatres.

Senior Awarded 4 Year Army ROTC Scholarship Sunday, March 04, 2012 (53 reads)
Congratulations to senior Kelsi Pickens who has officially been awarded a 4 year full (tuition, room and board, books, and monthly stipend) scholarship from the Army ROTC. She will attend the University of Kentucky in the fall as an Army ROTC cadet. This is an honored award. Approximately 1200 students all across the United States will earn this scholarship to attend college. After Kelsi graduates with her Dietetics degree, she will be commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant (officer) in the US Army and serve our country for four years. Congratulations, Kelsi!

On February 25, sophomore Nicole Zatorski participated in the Science and Engineering Fair of Northern Kentucky, SEFNK, at Northern Kentucky University. She received 1st Place in Chemistry in the Senior Division as well as 1st Place in Chemistry from the NKU Department of Chemistry. Nicole also received an award presented by the United States Air Force and qualified to present her project at the state science fair.

Latin Students Earn Honors at Ky. Junior Clasical League State Convention Monday, February 06, 2012 (66 reads)
Thirty Villa Madonna Academy High School Latin students represented our school this weekend at the Kentucky Junior Classical League State Convention. This was our strongest showing at convention to date, and, simply put, we made our presence known! Villa certamen teams all posted higher scores than ever before. We brought home hardware for a 3rd Place finish in our Roll Call Skit, produced by Chip and Fox Purcell, Tyler Ransdell, Brent Schleper, and Zacko Rightmire. A school t-shirt design by Grant Geisbrecht and Noelle Purcell earned 1st Place. Many Villa students placed in academic testing; notably, Eric Baugh earned 1st Place in Vocabulary in a field of over 200 students. Students, thanks for your endless enthusiasm and for being first class ambassadors for Villa Madonna Academy! We especially thank Mr. Mark Atwood for all he has done for our Latin students and program!

Congratulations to Mallory Butler who is a first place winner in the 2012 Why I Love America calendar contest. Mallory will receive a $200 savings bond. Villa Invited to PIXAR Campus Friday, October 14, 2011 (87 reads)
Senior James Ruschman and his mother accompanied teacher Mr. Steve Oldfield to the PIXAR Campus in California on October 16-18. They met with John Lasseter, Director of CARS 2 and Lead Driver, in addition to Denise Ream, Producer of CARS 2 and Pit-Crew Chief. They learned about the visual look of the movie in meetings with the production designer, director of photography, character art director, supervising animators and supervising technical director. This is the first-ever, hands-on experiential junket at Pixar, and James was thrilled to take along his portfolio and network.

Villa Madonna Academy High School has been awarded the EXEMPLARY HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT AWARD. The award will be presented at the Greater Cincinnati Celebration of Service on September 27! The award is for our work in Guatemala where, this year, our group installed concrete floors, stoves and water purification systems in homes and in the local school. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists. These semifinalists represent the top 1% of students in the nation. 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools took the qualifying test. Villa Leads Diocese in Sen. Jeff Green Scholars Thursday, September 15, 2011 (126 reads)
Senator Jeff Green Scholars: Twenty-two students from the Diocesan high schools have been named Senator Jeff Green Scholars by achieving a 4.0 grade point average all four years of high school and scoring at least a 28 composite on the ACT. The title honors the late state Senator Jeff Green of Mayfield, who served in the Kentucky General Assembly from 1992-1997. VMA High School has 8 scholars –the highest number in the Diocese (BBHSS – 2; CCH – 1; CLS – 4; HCDHS – 5; NDA – 2). Senior Wins State KHSAA Sportshmanship Award Monday, May 02, 2011 (224 reads)
Senior Katie Ransdell had been notified last month that she had won the Regional KHSAA Sportsmanship Award and, as a result, was eligible for the State Award. All of those regional award winners were invited to dinner last night at the KHSAA headquarters in Lexington. Out of the 293 schools in Kentucky, 16 regions, 15 sanctioned sports - two winners were selected: one girl, one boy. That one girl is girl golfer and VMA High School senior Katie Ransdell! This is a great honor, and we congratulate Katie, her parents, and Coach Ken Theissen and Coach Gretchen Theissen!

Academy students are chosen based on a variety of qualities and accomplishments, and they were selected from a large and highly competitive group of high school juniors from Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Senior Merits Semi-Final Award in John Stossel Essay Contest Friday, April 29, 2011 (244 reads)
Senior Katie Ransdell’s essay has been selected as a Semi-finalist in the Stossel in the Classroom “What’s Great About America Essay Contest.” Katie received a certificate and a check for $100, and the VMA English Department received an autographed copy of John Stossel’s book. More than 7,500 students from across the country participated in the essay contest, and all winners were in the top 3% of all essays submitted. Congratulations to Katie Ransdell!

Juniors Chosen as Governor's Scholars Sunday, April 17, 2011 (213 reads)
Two of our juniors have been selected as Governor’s Scholars. This is a highly competitive process among all juniors in the state of Kentucky. Nominees are chosen by a Statewide Selection Committee. Each school may submit only a certain number of juniors, based upon enrollment in the junior class. Obviously, the smaller schools are only permitted to submit a few of the many highly-qualified students they have. Junior Chosen for United States Naval Summer Seminar Tuesday, April 05, 2011 (210 reads)
Junior Rachel Bailey is one of 750 students from across the country selected to participate in the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar in Annapolis, this June. The students live in the midshipman hall, attend academic classes, and participate in daily physical training, experiencing the daily life at the Academy. Along with this, Rachel is automatically applied to the Academy for admission. Congratulations to Rachel.

Students Selected to Represent Ky at National Conference Tuesday, April 05, 2011 (229 reads)
From the 3000 students from both KYA and KUNA, a few select were nominated to submit an application to represent Kentucky at CONA (Conference on National Affairs, held in North Carolina each summer with reps from other states). The application required the submittal of an original bill proposal on a subject of national interest and several short essays. Of 98 applicants, 25 students were selected to attend. These were announced at the end of the conference last weekend. Corey Martin and Nicole Zatorski were selected, and Zacko Rightmire was selected as an alternate. This is quite an honor that three students from our school were selected! Congratulations to Corey, Nicole and Zacko!

VMA Students Win at APEC Conference Monday, March 14, 2011 (217 reads)
Ten Villa Madonna Academy High School students represented Malaysia in the simulated APEC Conference at the University of Cincinnati on March 12. The Trade Committee came in 1st Place, and the Security Affairs, Social Affairs and Science & Technology committees all came in 2nd Place. Villa's team of Tyler Arnzen, Robin Brundage, Hannah Knochelmann, Ryan Laber, Hawken Lord, Connor Louis, Corey Martin, Sarah Mustian, Anna Neikirk and Alexis Simpson took 2nd Place as Overall Best Economy.

We begin today with fantastic news from National Merit. The National Merit Scholarship Program has determined which of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September are now National Merit Finalists. You will remember that these students are selected from an original pool of more than 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT. As seniors, National Merit selects the Finalists based on not only their PSAT score but recommendations and student essays. We are proud to announce that our three Semifinalists are now FINALISTS!!!! Congratulations to Cecily Kennedy, Sarahmarie Specht-Bird and Lauren Vennefron who have been named National Merit Finalists. In a school our size, to have three National Merit Finalists truly speaks to the faculty, students and parents and the incredible program in our high school. In addition, our ACT scores continue to be higher than the Diocesan, State and National levels. Also, almost 10% of the senior class has been recognized as National Merit Finalists, Semifinalists and Commended students! The Villa JCL represented our school well at the Kentucky Junior Classical League convention. Villa won first prize in the “School Spirit” contest on the convention’s first day. The following students also placed in the top ten in one or more categories of academic testing: Jessa Plattner, Keegan Hodge, Anna Neikirk, Michael Kresge, Kimberly Yocom, Amada Schleper, and Joey Schutzman. VFW Voice of Democracy Speech Contest Winners: Congratulations to Kiley Stoll, Lauren Wagner and Nicole Hennard who took the top three spots in the VFW Voice of Democracy Speech Contest. This year, Villa competed against two other schools, Simon Kenton and Holmes. There were 11 contestants and Villa took First, Second and Third places. Nicole Hennard won the competition and advances to the district finals. The students will be honored in a special ceremony early next year. Congratulations speech students!
