Public Speaking / Desktop Publishing
Course Overview – Semester 1: The focus of this class is to prepare students for College Speech class (SPE 101) which is a class that all college students must take as well as to provide valuable information to help make the transition from high school to college smoother. Some of the topics that will be covered include impromptu speeches and prepared speeches, speech delivery, basic elements of speech writing, interviewing techniques, resume writing, reading a college course catalog, scholarship information and finding money for college, credit information and how to avoid getting into credit card debt.
Course Prerequisites for Public Speaking/Transition to College:

Desktop Publishing - Semester Program
Grade Level: 11, 12
Course Overview – Semester 2:
Desktop Publishing is a course designed to allow students to develop proficiency in using desktop publishing software to create a variety of printed and electronic publications. Students will learn page layout design principles, including integration of text and graphics and use hardware and software to develop and create quality materials. Instructional strategies include the use of Microsoft Publisher and Adobe CS3 InDesign software, teacher demonstrations, collaborative instruction, interdisciplinary and/or culminating projects, problem solving and critical thinking activities, simulations, and project-based learning activities.
Special Note: Students may be using Microsoft Office products (Word and PowerPoint) in this class, however are expected to have a basic understanding of how to use these products as elementary use concepts will not be covered during class.
Course Prerequisites:
All students should have successfully completed the Public Speaking semester course prior to taking this course. All students should have basic computing skills.
Class Size Limit: 12 – Due to the interactive instructional process of this course, this class must be limited in size.
