Pope John Paul II "For the Year of Volunteer Work"

On March 11, 2010, in the Council Chambers of Cincinnati’s City Hall, Villa Madonna Academy High School received a Community Service Youth Recognition Award. The High School Human Relations Service Award was created by the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission in 2007 to recognize schools which have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to human relations through service to others and programs honoring diversity. Awards are given to celebrate and recognize community service projects that have: (1) Overall impact in the community, state or nationwide, (2) Creativity and uniqueness, (3) Degree to which actions or programs have mobilized others, and (4) Degree to which action or programs promote a commitment to service and contributions to humanity.

In these days of economic trouble, our young people put forth countless hours performing community service and worthwhile endeavors that benefit other people. Villa Madonna recognizes that volunteer work in service projects enables students to build bridges of hope along with a better appreciation for the value of education and helping others. Villa’s nomination for the service award included documentation of the following service learning projects sponsored by VMA teachers: Memory Project (Art classes) – Ms. Jan Herrmann; Tri-M Songs for Soup (Music students) – Mrs. Amanda Rood; Working for Clean Drinking Water in Madagascar (French classes) – Sr. Mary Carol Henggeler; Exponential Functions (Math classes) – Ms. Catherine Kennedy; Christian Outreach Program – Mr. Quinton Jefferson; The Fairy Godmother Program (Drama class) – Ms. Jodie Meyn. Villa’s Campus Minister, Mr. Quinton Jefferson, accepted the award on the school’s behalf.

The students and program at Villa Madonna were recognized for tutoring younger students at Howell Elementary and raising funds for an orphanage in Namibia that cares for infants orphaned by AIDS.

Every high school student must complete twenty (20) hours of community service per school year. They may count hours earned the summer before school begins. Follow the link to

Service Opportunities Suggestions

UGive.org. After registering, students and parents may navigate the site and find service opportunities or select from the "Featured Opportunities" under the "My School" tab.

Participating in a project with the Christian Outreach Program (COP) is a great way to complete service hours.

Students may also contact one, two, three, or more teachers, guidance counselors, or administrators at Villa. They can arrange days and times to organize their classrooms/offices, to file, or to clean.

Please keep in mind the reason for completing community service hours. Service is about freeing our neighbors and ourselves from alienation.

Please review our
General Service Guidelines form for more information on the conditions of a volunteer situation and other procedural facts.

Villa Madonna Academy High School was the only high school in Northern Kentucky (both private and public) to be recognized this school year!

Congratulations to our High School!
