First graders are introduced to the responsibility of choosing their own appropriate reading material, caring for it properly and returning it safely. They are exposed to a variety of picture books and begin to gain an understanding of the types of materials available in the library. Accompanying projects and handouts emphasize listening skills and comprehension.
Second graders continue to be exposed to the work of a variety of authors and illustrators. We begin to look at the backgrounds and inspirations of some well-known authors and illustrators. Fairy tales will be emphasized including a large unit on Cinderella stories from around the world. Accompanying discussions, projects and handouts emphasize development of storyline and comprehension.
Third graders continue to be exposed to a variety of authors and illustrators. Third graders are introduced to the Dewey classification system and begin more purposeful library activities. The emphasis/theme for this year is folk literature; porquoi stories, trickster tales, legends and tall tales.
Fourth graders begin using the on-line catalog to find their own materials and use these materials constructively and independently. They will be introduced to the independent use of reference books. The emphasis/theme of this year will be non-fiction, historical fiction and memoirs.
Fifth graders practice using reference books, such as encyclopedias, atlases, and almanacs. They will solidify their understanding of the Dewey Classification System. The emphasis/theme of this year will be ‘genres of the month’ which will include poetry, biography, realistic fiction, folk literature, reports of information, mystery/suspense, fantasy and science fiction.
