The Fourth Grade Math course presents topics fundamental to mathematical literacy and mathematical power for intermediate level students. An integral part of the learning process is the review of earlier concepts and procedures in which students use previously learned skills to develop proficiency with more advanced concepts. Problem solving, hands-on work with manipulatives (concrete materials), and mathematical reasoning extend students’ learning.

The Fourth Grade Language Arts curriculum is an integrated program consisting of 4 core components: Literature, Writing, Grammar and Vocabulary. It places emphasis on application of traditional and contemporary literary selections. The writing module compliments each component of our Language Arts curriculum. Activities elicit personal responses, creative writing, art projects, and discussions. Grammar, strong vocabulary development, and technology are integrated throughout the components. Individual learning styles are met through differentiated instruction.

The Fourth Grade Religion program is a developmental program, based on Scripture and rooted in the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This program focuses on the beliefs of the Catholic Church and the teachings of Jesus with a strong emphasis on Creation/Creator/Father, The Beatitudes, The Ten Commandments and the Saints. The students also learn about Benedictine Values and how to incorporate them in their daily lives.

The Fourth Grade Science Curriculum implements the national science standards within the context of KY and Diocesan science criteria. The processes of inquiry are continuously reinforced, while the content focuses on life, physical and earth sciences. Our program provides hands-on experiences which increase vocabulary and concept development. The students are able to relate science to their own lives, and then apply this knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

The Fourth Grade Social Studies Curriculum incorporates the five themes of geography (region, human/environment interaction, location, and movement) with the study of the five regions of the United States. This program includes an overview of the types of land, bodies of water, weather, and resources of each region. Comparisons are made with other areas in the world.

The skills of using context clues, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, summarizing main ideas and details, understanding globes, charts, pictures and working in small groups is practiced throughout the year.

Children apply the concepts and skills they have acquired to the study of their own state.
