Walk neighbors dog to help out.
Pick up litter around your neighborhood or at a park.
Cut the grass for a neighbor.
Babysit for a neighbor - be a Mother's Helper.
Clean your grandparents home.
Gather clothing from your neighbors and donate to a local shelter.
Make a care package with mittens, socks, t-shirt, etc. for a child at a homeless shelter.
Visit a nursing home.
Rake leaves, shovel now, wash windows, etc. for a senior citizen.
Go for a walk with a senior citizen in your community.
Teach someone how to use a computer.
Get a group together to sing or present a play at a nursing home.
Read to a younger child or help tutor a student.
Read books or the newspaper on tape for visually impaired people.
Bring toys to children at a local hospital.
Plant a garden or a tree where a neighborhood can enjoy it.
Set up a recycling system for your home.
Clean up trash along a river.
Create a campaign to encourage biking and walking.
Bake dog biscuits for the local SPCA.
Create a birthday in a box for a child at a local shelter.
Knit scarves for a group like SCARF IT UP.
Create a welcome basket for a new neighbor and deliver the goodies.
Below is a list of possible places where parents might be able to go with their children to volunteer to do service. These are agencies whose names have been submitted by parents as possibly needing volunteer help. The phone numbers are the agencies' general number--you will need to contact the person in charge of volunteers. Some of these might not be appropriate for children of all ages. Department of Transportation needs families to adopt a highway. This can be done in your neighborhood.
Parish Kitchen 859-581-7745 They need individual desserts made for the 4th and 5th weeks of the month. They give a dessert with the meal when they feed people and tend to run out by the end of the month. Families could bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, Rice Krispy treats, etc. and take them to the Parish Kitchen. Call ahead of time to arrange this.
