Physical Education (Grades K – 6th)
Welcome back to school. I hope you had a wonderful summer vacation and I know you were very active in your exercising while you were enjoying your vacation.
The Physical Education Program and Physical Education Enrichment Programs at Villa Madonna Academy have three main goals:
To provide opportunities to learn new games and practice familiar games and athletics.
To encourage teamwork and fair play when playing games and athletics.
To lay the foundation of exercise as a lifelong habit.
I will be evaluating the students by playing a variety of games every time they come to class. Each grade level is different, but the criterion used explores basic movement and fitness concepts, coordination, sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and respect. Physical Education is taught once a week. The gym, as well as the beautiful grounds surrounding VMA, is used for the Physical Education classes.
In September, the students in grade 2nd thru 6th, will participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge and the Villa Madonna Academy Fitness Test. The mile run and the fifty-yard dash are outside activities and hopefully the weather will cooperate. The balance of the challenges / activities can be completed in the gym. I am introducing the various Fitness Challenges to the 1st grade in order for the students to understand what they will have to complete next year as 2nd graders.
Grading / Scoring Criteria (Grades K – 6th)
Each and every time your child participates in Physical Education class, they are evaluated. The criteria used for in the evaluation process: responsibility, participation, and sportsmanship. Responsibility includes bringing and wearing the proper physical education uniform as set forth in the school dress code. Participation includes the student’s ability to follow directions and give the best possible effort during activities for the class. Sportsmanship includes the student’s ability to follow the rules and exhibit forms of good sportsmanship i.e., making positive comments to classmates and speaking and acting respectfully to the individual in charge.
Health (Grades 1st – 6th)For the month of August, Health will be focusing on the various forms of bullying, recognizing when someone is bullying you and what could be done to handle the situation.
Enrichment (Grades 1st - 6th)
The Physical Education Program and Physical Education Enrichment Programs at Villa Madonna Academy have three main goals:
To provide opportunities to learn new games and practice familiar games and athletics.
To encourage teamwork and fair play when playing games and athletics.
To lay the foundation of exercise as a lifelong habit.
Students have the opportunity to play games over numerous class times in order for them to feel comfortable with new skills. The focus for all of the activities will be to develop an understanding of the game, learning a role or strategy, playing fairly and within the rules of the game.
Finally, the students are also here to have fun. By understanding the games better, having opportunities to practice skills, and forming a habit of exercise, hopefully more students will choose to engage in physical activity in their free time.
