"You owe it to yourself to be the best you can possibly be - in baseball and in life."

Mile Run - Many thanks to the parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents and aunts and uncles that came to help with the mile run.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated by the students and myself.  Thank you again!

Physical Education (Grades K - 6th)

The Physical Education Program and Physical Education Enrichment Programs at Villa Madonna Academy have three main goals:

1. To provide opportunities to learn new games and practice familiar games and    athletics;
2. to encourage teamwork and fair play when playing games and athletics;
3. and to lay the foundation of exercise as a lifelong habit.

I evaluate the students by playing a variety of games every time they come to class. Each grade level is different, but the criterion used explores basic movement and fitness concepts, coordination, sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and respect. Physical Education is taught once a week. The gym as well as the beautiful grounds surrounding VMA, is used for the Physical Education classes.

During the month of May, the Spring portion of the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge and VMA Fitness Challenge will be completed for grades 2 - 6.  Also, Physical Education classes are going to continue to focus on games of movement and teamwork by playing several old games and some new games.

MILE RUN UPDATE: The Mile Run will take place the week of 04/30 thru 05/04.  Please feel free to come watch, walk or run with your child.  Also, please have your child bring appropriate running clothes and something to drink (no sodas or energy drinks).

LOST AND FOUND:  Our boxes of misplaced clothes are growing rather quickly.  Please check our Lost and Found boxes for these missing items.

Grading / Scoring Criteria (Grades K – 6th)

Each and every time your child participates in Physical Education class, they are evaluated.  The criteria used in the evaluation process include the following areas: responsibility, participation, and sportsmanship. Responsibility includes bringing and wearing the proper physical education uniform as set forth in the school dress code (see the handbook).  Participation includes the student's ability to follow directions and give the best possible effort during activities for that particular class.  Sportsmanship includes the student's ability to follow the rules and exhibit good sportsmanship (i.e., making positive comments to classmates and speaking and acting respectfully to the individual in charge).

Note:  Please remind your child to bring his/her gym shoes and clothes each and every time to class.  Since school began, I have been watching to see if a pattern develops with the  students of not bringing their gym shoes / clothes to class as this will have a direct impact on their grade.

 Health (Grades 1st - 6th)

During the month of May, we are going to discuss the five (5) senses and the various body systems.  The students will be learning what a marvelous and wonderful machine the human body is and how important it is to keep our body in good working order by developing healthy eating habits, reducing stress, getting enough sleep, rest and keeping the body healthy so that their bodies will last a lifetime.

 Please continue to review with your child the need to practice proper handwashing techniques and covering their cough in order to help them stay healthy, in spite of the flu or bird flu scares.  It is the best way to prevent epidemics and pandemics!

Now that the weather is warm and sunny, remember to wear sunscreen protection!

Enrichment (Grades 1st - 6th)

The Physical Education Program and Physical Education Enrichment Programs at Villa have three main goals:

1. To provide opportunities to learn new games and practice familiar games and athletics;
2. to encourage teamwork and fair play when playing games and athletics;
3. and to lay the foundation of exercise as a lifelong habit.

Students have the opportunity to play games over numerous class times in order for them to feel comfortable with new skills. The focus for all of the activities will be to develop an understanding of the game, learning a role or strategy, playing fairly and within the rules of the game.

Finally, the students are also here to have fun. By understanding the games better, having opportunities to practice skills, and forming a habit of exercise, hopefully more students will choose to engage in physical activity in their free time.
