As you know , all of our Make Sale profits will be donated to charity. Today we will begin the process of determining which charity will receive our funds. This decision is ultimately up to you. Today, please spend some time researching a charity that you would like the class to support. Here is the information you should for:
Name:
What is their goal/mission:
How many people or animals do they help each year?
What percentage of the money that the get is used for their mission (Not all funds donated to a charity are used directly for their mission. Some money is used to pay the people that work there and for things like rent, copies, etc. These are usually listed as administrative costs)
Why should people support this charity? (What are some of the statistics that show that this group is worthy of our support. For example, if my charity was a soup kitchen, I would look for local statistics about hunger.)
Here are some charities that can get you started. You may use one from this list, or one that you are personally familiar with.
Ronald McDonald House (This is a group of homes that are located near hospitals. They house families who have children staying in the hospitals for treatment of serious or chronic illnesses)
Mary Rose Mission
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Shriners Hospital for Children (This is a special type of hospital that helps children with severe orthopedic and burn injuries. They do not charge the families any money. They only use donations)
The Parish Kitchen
Diocesan Children’s Home (Local home for children without families)
Kenton (or Boone, or other) Animal Shelter
There are soooooo many worthy charities, take some time to really research and make a good decision.
Print your reaserch, then work on your book trailer.

May 9
Today you are to make a flier and a pricing guide for your business.  The flier is to advertise for the entire project.  Remember to include the important information for people to know when, where, why, and how.  The pricing guide is going to be specifically for your group.  This pricing guide will be on your table during the sale to show the prices of the items for your business.
After you finish the flier and pricing guide, you need to finish your book trailer from last week.

5/02/12
Good Morning. Please download the document above called "book trailer." Follow the instructions to complete the activity.

April 24
Today you begin by doing a short webquest.  Click the link: http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/rwilkins/plate_tectonics%20grade%2010.htm.  Follow the directions and complete the questions in a word document.  Skip the questions that ask you to draw something.  When you are finished, please print.  Be sure your name is on the paper.

After you finish answering the questions, you should use the remaining time to work on your book.  This will probably be the only day in the computer lab to use, so use your time wisely.

April 18- Reserach!
Today we wanted to give you time to do some preliminary research for your picture book project. You should spend some time doing some general reading about your topic so that you can narrow down your focus.
Step 1: Open an new google doc. If you want to record information (in your own words of course) from a site, you must also copy the url(address) and paste it in your word document . Keep the information with link where you got it from.
Step 2: You may use the following two sites for research:
www.kyvl.org and www.sweetsearch.com no other search engines should be used. Try to focus on primary sources first.
Step 3: try to create a list of sub topics you will focus on throughout your book.

(For example: little known facts, types of events, how the Olympics got started, etc) The kinds of information that you include is really up to you, just be sure that it is grouped together by some sort of theme. (In other words, don't just slap 10 random facts up there and call it done)

Hello 6th graders! I have a short activity for you to complete. Click docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform to take the survey. When you have finished, you may try out one of the actvities below.

5/18/11
Welcome to your 2nd to last computer class of the 6th grade. Your assignment today is to create a jeopardy game reviewing concepts of the 6th grade.
There are a couple of different ways you can create your game:
-          The theme of game could be 6th grade, and the topics would be the different subjects (math, science, English, social studies).
-          Another way the game can be set up would be to have the theme of the game a certain subject. For example, the theme could be math, and the topics could be vocabulary, algebra, word problems, geometry, etc.
You will find the template for the jeopardy game on the E:/ drive -> Student Share Files -> 6th Grade -> Jeopardy Template -> Jeopardy Template. Once you have the PowerPoint open, you must save it to E:/ drive -> Student Share Files -> 6th Grade -> (Find your name).
After you have all your questions and answers on the PowerPoint, you may change fonts and colors of your review game.
You may begin working unless you have a question. Have fun!

Good morning! You have many things to accomplish this morning.
1)      You must finish your commercial for the “Make” sale. All commercials must be finished by the end of class. We will watch these commercials this afternoon to pick the winner.
2)      You will be researching charities to which we will donate all our profits from the business project. Your business’ job is to research and pick 2 charities you wish to donate the profits to. You will have to write a paragraph explaining why you chose each charity and what the charity does for the community. (This means you will turn in 2 paragraphs, one for each charity.)
3)      Finally, you need to make a flyer for your business.
I must have all three of these things before the end of class. Be sure to work quickly and quietly.

Good morning!  Today you are going to finish your PSA.  You must work quietly so your classmates can do their narrations.

After your PSA is complete, you will do the following:

You will write an announcement for Mrs. Bosley to announce in the morning telling the school about our 6th grade business project.  This announcement should have infomation about the entire project (what are we doing, why are we going this, what are we learning, where can the students see prototypes of the products, and finally when are we selling these products).  Products will be on display in the display case outside the main office, and we will be selling these products in the mornings in the cafeteria on May 17th - 19th.  The announcement should be a long paragraph including all necessary information.

After you write an announcement, you will make a flyer to advertise your product.  Flyers should be neat and eye-catching.  Flyers should make students want to buy your product.

Today you are going to be doing research for your PSA-

You will be using the Kentucky Virtual library. You MAY NOT USE GOOGLE today. You will be researching the entire time. No games, you will be working the entire time.

You will need to keep track of the following information for any research that you use or document word for word: author, title, publication title, date published, issue no (if magazine).

Thanks,

Ms. Y

PSA Research

The first think I'd like you to do is get your headphone covers. Then proceed to this website. There you will learn a little more about the process of creating a PSA.www.wiredsafety.org/wiredlearning/psa/

After you are done please answer the following questions (you may type or write)

1) What is a PSA?

2) What is its purpose?

3) What is creative commons licensing? Why do we need to keep track of licensing information?

Next, take a look at these psa's. Make a list of 5 things that were well done/caught your attention and 5 things you would do to improve them.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Missyuenger

www.youtube.com/watch

www.youtube.com/watch

www.youtube.com/watch

You will have a few choices in regards to topics for our psa project. They are:

Bullying (cyber or verbal)

Child Labor (Chocolate, Gap, India, Wal-mart, Nike)

Childhood obesity (childhood diabetes, play 360, Mrs. Obama's health initiative)

Environmental issues (water pollution, deforestation, air pollution)

Before you decide your topic (which we will narrow down in class) you need to do a little reading.

Start by doing a search at one or all of the following websites:

wrarchives.weeklyreader.com/WRA-Home.aspx (magic word: vmasixthgrade)

tweentribune.com

www.tfk.com

www2.scholastic.com/browse/scholasticNews.jsp

If you need more specific search phrases try using the terms above, a + sign and a word from the parentheses)

Make a list of 10 key words that come up when you search out these topics.

Finally, tell me which topic appeals the most to you. Explain using a topic sentence, three supporting details and a concluding sentence. This should be turned in with the answers to the above assignments.

3/16  Good Morning, today we will be completing your art podcasts by adding narration. This means that you will need to work very quietly. If you finish your podcasts and/or are waiting to record, here are some fun options. You may choose something from this list or Google Earth, or Carmen San Diego.

Try your hand at making a short animated movie at www.zimmertwins.com or kerpoof.com (there are quite a few different things that you can do here)

Today in computer class you will begin research for your art project.

Here are the directions for the research part of the project:

Art Project:

·         PICTURES:

o   Find 5 pictures of the artist’s work that you particularly like (or find 4 works and 1 picture of the artist)

o   These need to be saved in the picture folder of your H drive.

o   You need to know the title of the work and when it was created.

·         RESEARCH:

o   You need enough information about the artist’s life, his/her work, art movement, etc . to be able to speak for 2 minutes.

**Before asking teachers questions, you must reread all of the directions.  Then ask the person sitting beside you.  If you are still unsure, you may raise your hand to ask your question.

Today we are going to be using Google Earth. First, look at the document list above and download the document called Google Earth. It has a tutorial that will help you with the basics of Google Earth.
