May 14-18, 2012
THANK YOU!!! Thank you for the beautiful roses, carnations, impression cards from the students, and all the kind notes and other tokens of appreciation I received last week during Teacher Appreciation Week. I am grateful to be educating a group of children who are so compassionate, well-behaved, and respectful. Their behavior and attitude towards learning speaks volumes about you as their parents. Thank you for reinforcing this with them on a daily basis. I will miss them dearly next year!
TALENT SHOW: Ms. Ransom's talent show is this week Monday for last names of the first half of the alphabet and next week Monday for the last half of the alphabet. Mrs. Law's homeroom will be performing first from 1:05-2:45 and my homeroom will follow from 1:50-2:30. Please ask your child which week s/he will be performing. Parents are invited to attend as well.
LAST WEEK (MAY 21, 22, 23): Student will not need to pack a lunch the last week of school. The room parents (Mrs. Gledhill, Mrs. Meyer, and Mrs. Davis) have organized lunches for the third grade class.
END OF THE YEAR PICNIC: The end of the year picnic has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 23rd from 11 - 2 at the soccer field (located near the baseball field by the main drive to Villa). It will be easier to park by the soccer fields (entrance on Amsterdam Rd.) rather than at Villa. The room parents have organized food which will be set up under the covered picnic area. After eating lunch, the students will play organized games (soccer, dodgeball, sack race, etc.)
PLEASE remember to send a WATER BOTTLE to school every day for your child. Brain research shows that drinking water is very beneficial to the nourishment of the brain and staying focused in school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
May God's blessing be abundant to you,
Mrs. Bridget Schleper

Religion
We will continue learning about how the Catholic Church is Apostolic. Many families have certain traditions that are passed on from one generation to the next. They may include skills such as painting, sewing, or cooking, as well as celebrations, stories, and songs. The faith we have today has been passed down to us from Jesus through Mary and the Apostles. For this reason, we say that the Church is apostolic. Like the Apostles, who were sent by Jesus to bring the Gospel to all nations, we are called to live our faith and spread the Good News to all people. There are many ways we can continue the Apostles' work. We can celebrate Sunday Mass, attend religion class, love our parents or guardians, comfort those who are ill or sad, apologize when they hurt others, pray, help others, and follow the example of Mary. Whenever we live according to our faith, we are following in the footsteps of the Apostles.
This week we will focus on activities that follow in the footsteps of the Apostles.
Math
This week we will continue learning about fractions. Our book describes a fraction as 1 or more equal parts of a region or whole or of a group or set. A fraction is made up of three parts: the numerator, which tells the number of equal parts being considered; the denominator, which tells the total number of equal parts in the region or set; and the fraction bar, which separates the numerator from the denominator. The students have been utilizing their fraction strips to compare and order fractions. This week we will take a closer look at mixed numbers, adding, and subtracting fractions.
Have your child play the interactive math games on the provided links or visit the third grade weblinks. There are many more fun interactive games posted under math. The games are set up by grade level and content.

Students will have a multiplication timed test every week. They will need to complete 30 problems in 1 minute. Now that we have completed 0-12 multiplication facts, they will have a mixed timed test every week in addition to an addition or subtraction timed test. They should be able to complete 100 subtraction/addition problems in 2 minutes. PLEASE practice MATH FACTS every night with your child.
Science
We will begin looking at simple machines and compound machines to learn how they work. Students will be completing a fun, group activity at school to better understand simple machines.
