October 3, 2008

Dear Parents,

We had a fire safety presentation by the Villa Hills Fire Department on Thursday. Your child should have brought home a coloring book and hat. They also received some stickers and a pencil. The fireman reminded them about checking the batteries in the smoke detectors. So they may be asking you. They also reminded the students to have a family meeting place.

We are walking on Wednesdays or Fridays. We walked on Wednesday this week. We joined our 6th grade buddies.

Please check the websites of the special teachers for updates. Specials include Foreign Language, Art, Music, Library, computer lab, and gym. My students have Ms. Suarez.

 Remember gym clothes for Monday.

Please note that we are changing the time that students go to foreign language. We tried to make the schedule work after recess but it just did not work out. The students will be going to foreign language on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 until 10:00. This will begin the week of September 15th.

Reading: We will begin reading a story called Mitchell is Moving. We have begun using a reading log in class.

Handwriting: We will be reviewing the manuscript alphabet for the first trimester.

Spelling:  The eigth week's words are ones with a long o vowel sound. Please read the spelling directions that went home. There is a copy of the words on line, as well as your child was given a copy on Friday. Please make sure that your child is writing sentences that are about as long as they are old. I expect to see sentences withing the 5-8 word range. Longer is even better. To make it more interesting try to write a story with the weeks' words.

Religion: We are learning about the disciples and the Holy Spirit. We are discussing how each of us is called to be a disciple for Jesus.

Math: We will continure to review addtion and subtraction facts ffor speed and accuracy. We will continue working on story problems and identifying the key words that let you know what operation is required. Please continue to work on math facts both subtraction and addition to 20. We are also working on two digit addition with regrouping.

Science: Mrs. Ridley will be teaching both classes science. Students are currently learning about plants.

Social Studies:  We are going to be learning about the election and the process of voting for a president. We covered some mapping skills as we learned about pirates and followed John Chapman's travels westward throught the USA planting apple seeds.

Other: Students have enrichment on Friday afternoons. Enrichment is where students are divided into multi-age groups and go to Library, Music, Art, P.E, and new this year drama. The special teachers have developed enrichment activities for the students. The students spend five weeks with that special and then rotate to a new enrichment group. Ask your child which activity or group they attend. We will begin a new rotation this coming Friday.
