November 18th, 2008
Dear Parents,
This is a busy time of year. We have several seasonal learning activities going on. We separated and bagged the candy from Halloween for the various charities.
We are reading and writing about the Pilgrims and Native Americans.
Picture retakes are next week.
You should have a received a conference time to meet with me. If you have not please email me. Thank you for understanding that I need to work my conferences around after school care and academic team.
Please check the websites of the special teachers for updates. Specials include Foreign Language, Art, Music, Library, computer lab, and gym. My students have Ms. Suarez.
Remember gym clothes for Monday.
You may place book orders on line. I have made them available to you. To order on line just go to the scholastic web site www.scholastic.com/parentordering Class User Name: mshaskampsclasss
password 2Horders. Also if you let me know I can hold books as gifts for Christmas. I will call or email you when they are in. Thank you.
Reading: We are reading some seasonal books currently. Ask your child what book they are reading in class. We have begun using a reading log in class. We are also writing seasonal stories.
Handwriting: We will be reviewing the manuscript alphabet for the first trimester.
Spelling: This week's words are ones with a y used as a vowel. Please read the spelling directions that went home. There is a copy of the words on line, as well as your child was given a copy on Friday. Please make sure that your child is writing sentences that are about as long as they are old. I expect to see sentences withing the 5-8 word range. Longer is even better. To make it more interesting try to write a story with the weeks' words.
Religion: We are learning about the sacrament of reconciliation.Students are to memorize the prayer on page 139 of their religion book.
Math: We will continure to review addtion and subtraction facts for speed and accuracy. I have noticed that several students do not know their subtraction facts. Please work with your child on subtraction. When students do not know their subtraction facts to 20 it greatly causes them to struggle with subtraction with regrouping. We are working on subtraction with regrouping now. Several students need extra help.
Science: Mrs. Ridley will be teaching both classes science. Students are currently learning about bats..
Social Studies: We are studying about the Pilgrims and native Americans.
Other: Students have enrichment on Friday afternoons. Enrichment is where students are divided into multi-age groups and go to Library, Music, Art, P.E, and new this year drama. The special teachers have developed enrichment activities for the students. The students spend five weeks with that special and then rotate to a new enrichment group. Ask your child which activity or group they attend. We will begin a new rotation this coming Friday.
Important Days:
November 19th: report cards come home in family folder
