Journal: .Journal is our weekly writing assignment. The assignment varies in length and information. We will begin journal on Mondays. Journal is due on good paper on Friday. Your child will know if he/she is behind in journal.Your child may come in at 7:30 to work on journal Tues. Thurs, Friday and most Wednesdays. Journal may not be taken home. All journal assignments must be completed in class. The students have ample time to complete the assignments.

We will work on Rainforest animals as one of our final journal entries for the year.

 Curriculum:

Your child will receive new spelling words on Mondays. These will be on the web page. Spelling tests will be each Friday, unless otherwise noted.  Spelling homework will consist of in-class workbook pages as well as writing the words independently at home.    Please check your child's planner nightly for specific spelling homework.

Reading: Reading will consist of reading stories, phonics, spelling, and journal writing.

Your child will receive a reading contract on Mondays. Please read with/to your child for 15 minutes at least 5 nights a week. Please record what you and your child have read and if your child is reading independently to you or you are reading to your child.  These will be collected on the following Monday morning.

Math:The first grade math curriculum is based on a  combination of series called Trailblazers and Progress in Math.  Math Trailblazers is based on the ideas that mathematics is best learned through solving many different kinds of problems and that all children deserve a challenging mathematics curriculum.  The program provides a careful balance of concepts and skills.Computation, measurement, geometry, data collection and analysis, estimation, graphing, patterns and relationships, mental arithmetic, and simple algebraic ideas are all an integral part of the curriculum. Progress in Math will reinforce skills which are taught.

Journal Writing:  Each week your child will work on a piece of writing which will be referred to as "journal".  This is a very critical part of the first grade reading program.  We will begin a new journal each Monday.  Your child will have time each day to work on journal.  Journal writings will be due on Fridays. Journal must be completed in school. If your child misses a day he/she may come in at 7:30 to work on journal or he/she may work on it at 7:45 when they enter the classroom. It is the responsibility of the child to complete the journal.
