2007-2008 Girls Basketball Season Review

The high school girl’s basketball team finished the season at 17-12 including 9-3 in the NKAC conference for second place finish. The team finished 9th in Kentucky in defense (points allowed per game) at 41.3 Highlights of the season include the runner-up spot in the All "A" Classic tournament losing the championship game in the final minutes after leading the entire game to Newport Central Catholic. The girls won 8 out of their last 9 games to finish the year on a positive, and then lost a tough game to Conference Champ Ludlow 47-40 in the District Tournament.

Laura McGehee and Carly Cenedella, were the only seniors, and both were excellent leaders leading an otherwise young team.  Both girls will be missed next year.

Villa Madonna Academy's basketball teams (boys and girls) were selected by the Northern KY Basketball Officials Association as the "Bob Miller Sportsmanship Award" winner for 07-08.  This is selected by the basketball officials and given annually to one school.  This is well deserved by our players, fans, parents, and school.

2006-2007

Summary of the Season
The girls had an outstanding year finishing the season at 18-7 including 10-2 in the NKAC for second place. This is the second fewest losses in school history after the five losses in 01-02. The team won 8 out of the last 9 games before lossing to Dixie Heights 52-41 in the District Tournament in a well-played game. Codie Gerwe joined the 1000 point club (only the third player to do so in school history and the first since 1993). She finished her senior year scoring 13.8 ppg, 7.0 reb, and 3.3 steals, and 2.3 assists for a really fine basketball career.  Codie was honored with two major awards:  Coaches Association Player of the Year, and NKAC Division III Player of the Year. No other VMA player has ever won both of these awards. Lucy VanMelle was selected All-Region by the Coaches Assoc., and All-Conference by the NKAC. Lucy finished her senior year averaging 12.4 ppg, and 8.2 reb. She finished her career with 674 points, and 546 rebounds. She also recorded the most blocked shots in school history for a career with 197 blocks.  Lauren Webster set a record for the most "3" point goals in a career with 63. Senior Colleen Desmond, who was injured almost all of the season, gave great moral support and was an integral part of this team. Other key players for this team included freshman Kim Schroer, who averaged 9.8 ppg and led the team in assists with 3.2 per game.  Laura McGehee, junior, was a top defensive player, who often guarded the opponents top player. Freshman Amy Kreutzer and Chelsea Case were key players off the bench giving this "good team" much support. Coach's comment: "This was a very good basketball team that played very well together, and represented Villa Madonna Academy in a way we can all be proud. The seniors will be missed."

2005-2006

The varsity finished 13-12 for the year finishing at 7-5 for third place in the NKAC. We lost the opening round game in the 34th District 41-25 although the girls played as hard as they could. Lucy VanMelle was selected All-Tournament Team.Codie Gerwe led the team in scoring this season with a 12.5 ppg average, led in steals at 4.0 per game and free throw % at 67%.  Lucy VanMelle led the team in rebounding at 8.6 reb/game and shot at 46% in field goal attempts. Lucy also had 71 blocked shots (pretty high for the region). Lauren Webster was excellent from the 3  point range shooting 39% and finished fourth in the region in this category.
The team was once again one of the top defensive teams in the area and state. We held opponents to 41.7 ppg (third in the region) and finished 11th in the state in this category.
Several other awards will be forthcoming in the next several weeks as the All-Region and All-Conference teams will be selected. Several of our players should be recoginized in these awards.
The JV team finished at 8-10 on the year, but many younger players gained valuable experience that should aid the varsity next season.
