2007-2008 HS Boys Basketball End Of Season Review
The boys' basketball team ended its ’07-’08 season with a 15-15 overall record, the best record in Villa boys' basketball history. The boys' ended the season with a 3 point, overtime loss to St. Henry in the regional tournament. This was the first time that any basketball from Villa has reached the regional tournament, and the Villa faithful couldn’t have asked for a better performance from the students that represented them on the court and in the stands.
The boys earned many awards and broke many records throughout this historic season. Stephen Love not only became the second boys basketball player to join the 1,000 point club, but he also became the all-time leading scorer in Villa’s boys basketball history with 1,244 career points. Stephen was also named to the All “A” tournament team, the All District tournament team and the All regional tournament team this year, in addition to being named Player of the Year for the 9th Region in Division III. Blake Bryan also had an impressive season. Not only did he lead all of Northern Kentucky in scoring with 638 points (21.3ppg) but he was also named to the District All-Tournament team and was named to the All 9th Region Team for Division III. Another leader for the Blue Lightning was Brian Hamilton. Brian led all of Northern Kentucky in rebounding with 277 rebounds (9.2 rebounds per game) and scored 314 points (10.5ppg) this season.
The boys had a very successful year and many thanks go out to the seniors: Tommy Bilbo, Tony Clarke, Connor Creaghead, Brian Hamilton, Stephen Love, Matt Stoffer, and Keena Westmoreland. These seven young men have set a standard of excellence that generations of athletes at Villa Madonna can strive to achieve.
The freshman team finished their limited schedule with a record of 1-4. There is a lot of talent on the freshman level and we’re looking for big things from this class. The JV team had a strong season and finished up with a 9-11 record. The JV team was led by sophomores David Schuh and Ryan Schroth and ended their season by winning the 9th Region Small Schools JV Tournament at Bellevue High School. Both the freshman and JV teams improved by leaps and bounds throughout the season and both teams are looking to get their chance to get back to the regional tournament. Coach Rob Starkey
