Sr. Dorothy Schuette, OSB '60 Celebrates her Golden Jubliee
Congratulations to Sr. Dorothy Schuette, OSB '60 as she celebrates her 50th anniversary as a Benedictine sister at St. Walburg Monastery. Sr. Dorothy has contributed in a myriad of ways since becoming a Benediction sister, but recently was honored for her work with the jail and prison ministry. Last month the KY Department of Corrections honored Sr. Dorothy with the 2012 Lucille Hurt Robuck "Commitment to Corrections" award. She has been a member of the national Exodus Prison Ministry for 20 years, and in 2009 was hired by the Diocese of Covington to coordinate its Jail Ministry Program. This program has nearly 50 volunteers and includes 14 counties in Kentucky. There are four functions to her ministry; to visit the inmates, to support families who have loved ones in prison, to counsel victims of crimes and to help former inmates as they transition back into society. Sr. Dorothy firmly believes this last piece of her ministry is essential. She says, "95% of the people who go to prison come out, and we want them to be good, active citizens, or they will go right back in. Without assistance, it's estimated that 66% of those who get out of prison will return within three years".
Congratulations on both your award and your Golden Jubilee, Sr. Dorothy!
