In celebration of and in perpetuation of the memory of his cherished wife, Jean Anne Hemsath Barsan ’52, George Barsan established a scholarship to benefit Villa Madonna Academy’s elementary and junior high school students. The scholarship will be awarded annually to two Villa Madonna Academy students who embody the Benedictine values that Jean Anne learned at Villa and carried into her everyday life. The scholarship recipients will also be students who would otherwise not be able to attend VMA because of limited financial resources.
Award Criteria:
- VMA elementary or junior high school students
- Displays personal characteristics that embody the Benedictine values, particularly the values of respect, work, reverence and hospitality.
- Academics - Displays characteristic of perseverance despite academic setbacks
- Families make financial sacrifices in order for their children to attend Villa
Application Requirements: Application must be submitted by April 30 of each year and include:
- A Villa Madonna Academy Application Form
- A letter written by the student and a letter written by an adult explaining why the student should receive the scholarship addressing the criteria listed above
- A recommendation letter from the student’s teacher
The scholarship recipients may retain scholarships through 8th grade but the students must re-apply annually. The current scholarship recipients will have priority over new scholarship applicants.
