New York Times bestselling author Scott Westerfeld spoke to students at Villa Madonna Academy on October 25.  He has written several sets of books for young adults, including Midnighters and the bestselling Uglies.  Westerfeld is currently working on his Leviathan trilogy, a fantasy set in the era of World War I.  Behemoth, the second book of the trilogy, has just been released.  Westerfeld spoke to students about his writing process, and about working closely with his illustrator so that the illustrations align with Westerfeld’s imagined characters and settings. He also fielded questions from the Villa students, ranging from “What’s your favorite of everything you’ve written?” to “Why did you put so many cliff hangers at the end of Leviathan?”  The visit was sponsored by Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cincinnati.

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 (214 reads)

 Sr. Mary Rabe

In a surprise celebration of Sr. Mary Rabe's 50th Jubilee as a Benedictine sister, Villa Madonna students presented a powerpoint show highlighting her contributions to Villa Madonna over the years.  Sister Mary was a 1958 grad, and has been teaching at Villa since 1970.

The students created and performed parodies of the songs "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria" from The Sound of Music, and Don't Stop Belivin', tailored to fit Sr. Mary.

They presented Sr. Mary with a pair of bejeweled safety goggles for use in her science lab, and a gift certificate.

Sr. Mary enjoyed her celebration, especially Brian Murray's performance as a singing nun!

Kindergarten Classes Test SMART tables
Thursday, October 07, 2010 (254 reads)

Villa Madonna kindergarten classes are using “SMART Tables” on a trial basis...

Villa Madonna kindergarten classes are using “SMART Tables” on a trial basis this month so the school can determine how these interactive learning aids can enhance the children’s educational experience. The SMART table is a multi-touch, multi-user computer designed to promote cooperation and interactive learning. Teachers choose instructional activities for the table’s display, then the children manipulate images on the tabletop screen to match, sort, and construct. Villa kindergarten teachers use a “centers” approach to classroom instruction, in which pupils rotate through a changing set of individual and small-group learning activities each day. The SMART table would complement existing teaching strategies which incorporate sensory experiences into the learning environment.

Katya Olivia, Leah Lusk, and Olivia Mann work on a cooperative matching activity.
