VMA Juniors Present Tales of Tolerance
VMA Juniors Present Tales of Tolerance

Inspired by Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” juniors at Villa Madonna Academy wrote original short stories based on themes of Tolerance and Acceptance.   Parents and friends were invited to the school theatre on October 23 and 24 to hear excerpts of these “Tales of Tolerance” performed by Villa’s Drama students and special guests, including anchors from Fox 19. The program included music and original artwork designed by the writers to enhance their stories.

Katie Cunha was chosen as winner of the “Harper Lee Award” for her story, “Interstate 59.”  This powerful tale, about a little girl whose bi-racial family is subjected to a vicious act of discrimination, was performed by Fox 19’s Regina Russo.  "It brought tears to my eyes," said Russo as she introduced the story.  Fox 19 anchor Corrie McConnell had similar praise for the story she performed, "What's Different."  Author Erin Fitzpatrick based this work on true events, telling the story of an Indian family subjected to abuse after taking over management of a popular market. Fitzpatrick won the “Blue Ribbon” award.

Teacher Steve Oldfield plans to forward the fifteen best short stories to a jury of published writers and journalists for further consideration.

Blue Ribbon winner Erin Fitzpatrick (L) was honored to have her story, “What’s Different,” read by Fox 19 anchor Corrie McConnell (R).

Villa Madonna students presented Journalism teacher Steve Oldfield with flowers following the performance of their “Tales of Tolerance.”
