February 6 - 10, 2012

What an outstanding Catholic Schools Week!  Thank you for sending your children to Villa Madonna Academy.  I am so blessed to embrace so many wonderul families in my life.  Blessings to you as parents, and know that your children are loved.

CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE:  We will celebrate Chinese New Year on Monday, February 6th by standing in the hallway with shakers to scare off the evil spirits.  Students will need to bring a shaker of some sort to school that day.  This can be one that is manufactured or homemade (example - made out of a water bottle with beans).  Please do not purchase a shaker for this event.

FIELD TRIP:  We have a Cultural Arts Field Trip to the Taft scheduled on February 15th to see Disney's My Son Pinocchio, Jr.  The buses will arrive around 8:30 am.  We will return after lunch at 11:45.  Therefore, ALL third grade students will need to PACK a LUNCH that day.  Please mark this information on your calendar.  Mrs. Forster is the lucky lottery winner and will be my parent chaperone!

PLEASE remember to send a WATER BOTTLE to school every day for your child.  Brain research shows that drinking water is very beneficial to the nourishment of the brain and staying focused in school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

May God's blessing be abundant to you,

Mrs. Bridget Schleper

"Make Time for the Quiet Moments as God Whispers and the World is Loud"

Religion

This week we will begin to work on our third grade service project.  The students will learn about hunger and homelessness in our society.  We will read books, create simple skits about teaching others about homelessness and providing assistance, learn about the role of social service agencies, and discuss finances affiliated with homelessness.  The students will also define "home" and its attributes and contrast those attributes to "homelessness".  They will record their findings in a self-created home.  On Thursday, your children need to bring to school the items that were sent home on the pink paper to donate to the men and women staying at the Cold Shelter.

Math

We will continue multiplication and division concepts 6-12.  I am so proud of the students with multiplying by two digits.  They continue to grasp this concept quickly.  They will continue to work on word problems and Math Minute daily.

Have your child play the interactive math games on the provided links or visit the third grade weblinks.  There are many more fun interactive games posted under math.  The games are set up by grade level and content.

Students will have a multiplication timed test every week.  They will need to complete 30 problems in 1 minute.  Now that we have completed 0-5 multiplication facts, they will have a mixed timed test every week in addition to an addition or subtraction timed test.  They should be able to complete 100 subtraction/addition problems in 2 minutes.  PLEASE practice MATH FACTS every night with your child.

Science

We will continue disucussing animal adaptations.  The students will complete different labs during this unit to help better understand about animal adaptations.
